A Brief History of SnodWiggs

Above: The first SnodWiggs collecting trip! (Spring 2006)

It's a well-established fact that bugs are cool, and the people that love bugs are even cooler. It was only natural, therefore, that these two things should be combined. And that is why in November of 2005, a small group of enterprising entomology majors joined forces to create Snodgrass and Wigglesworth, the Cornell University Undergraduate Entomology Club.

Taking its name from two of the most well-known entomologists of our time (who also, coincidentally, had names that were fun to say), Snodgrass and Wigglesworth ("SnodWiggs" for short) initially started out as a small group of 7-10 entomology students who would get together every week to discuss interesting insect-related topics. As time went on, SnodWiggs nearly tripled in size and came to attract undergrads from a multitude of different backgrounds. Today, our enthusiastic and energetic club members hail from departments as diverse as Entomology, Environmental Engineering, Biological Sciences, and Computer Science! But we are all bound together by our common love of insects and their kin.

From the very beginning, Snodgrass and Wigglesworth was dedicated to both improving our own understanding of the insect world and to fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of insects and their kin in the Cornell and Ithaca communities. To this end, many types of insect-related activities were established in the early years of Snodwiggs that would later become traditions, including weekly guest presentations on entomological topics, an annual winter camping/insect collecting adventure, and the viewing of 'Bad Bug' films. We have also traveled the country collecting insects and have even conquered a small island!

Now in its 12th consecutive year of existence, Snodgrass and Wigglesworth has become the largest and longest-lasting undergrad entomology club in Cornell history, and we are going stronger than ever! We have many more fun, insectious plans for the future and we hope that you will join us!
