Welcome

WHO WE ARE:

Cornell Students for Hunger Relief (CHR) is a program of the Public Service Center. CHR works to learn about current local and national hunger issues and to alleviate food insecurity in Ithaca and Tompkins County by facilitating food drives to benefit local food pantries.

WHAT WE DO:

In the Fall, we facilitate our annual Thanksgiving Turkey Donation Drive. In 2017, we collected thousands of dollars in funds to provide 320 turkeys to families in the community.  The money was donated to Groton Food Providers and Tompkins Community Action to purchase turkeys for families in need.

Throughout the year, we also participate in Mobile Food Pantry visits through the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. As part of these visits, we help distribute food to community members in need. Most recently, in September of 2017, we volunteered with the Mobile Food Pantry to distribute fresh produce and other grocery items at the Salvation Army in Downtown Ithaca.

During the Spring semester, we facilitate the Big Red Food Drive, the largest food collection effort on campus. As part of the Big Red Food Drive, CHR encourages students to use the extra BRBs they have at the end of the year to purchase non-perishables, which we then donate to Tompkins County hunger relief organizations such as Ithaca Youth Bureau, the Food Pantry of the Southern Tier, and the Friendship Donations Network. We also encourage students to donate excess food items from their dorm rooms and apartments to this end-of-year food drive.
